CAPRIVI REGION INTEGRATED FIRE MANAGMENT STRATEGY (2006 - present)

Integrated Rural Development & Nature Conservation (IRDNC) — Namibia

Integrated Fire Management, Caprivi

The regional program is developing and implementing integrated fire management across 10 000 km² of communal, state and private land in sub-Saharan African savanna.

It is capacity building the community, government agencies, NGOs and private sector by developing, coordinating and implementing a 5-year regional Integrated Fire Management Strategy.

The Program has achieved tangible land use and livelihood benefits, reduced poverty and improved environmental management, thus enhancing sustainability without costly machinery and resources.

The fundamentals of the program have been adopted into national policy and effectively employed in other areas of Namibia and southern African countries.

REDUCING FOREST FIRE EMERGENCIES (2009)

Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) — Zimbabwe

Reducing forest fire emergencies

This was a pilot Community Based Fire Management (CBFiM) project, involving 20 communities, neighbouring plantations and indigenous forests in the Miombo Woodlands of Manicaland and Matabeleland North Provinces.

It improved the capacity of government agencies to develop and implement Provincial Integrated Fire Management Strategies. This involved a CBFiM Training Manual, Grass Roots Training and Skills Transfer, Awareness Campaigns and a National Fire Information System.

The successful pilot achieved a significant reduction in uncontrolled fires in 2009 and provided a strategic platform to expand to national level.
